WINGHAM ? The re-energized Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival?s 2012 Short Story Competition has received a record number of submissions ? 52 stories with the addition of five stories for young authors between 13 and 19 years old.

The competition, originally hosted by the Wingham Horticultural Society, is being revitalized by volunteers from Huron Arts & Heritage Network and Wingham this fall, along with partners that include the Municipality of North Huron and Blyth Festival. The refreshed festival is focused on providing a forum for writers to develop their craft and connect with like-minded literati and emerging writers in the region. It is named after Canadian author Alice Munro, who was born in Wingham and sets many of her works in southwestern Ontario.

Committee members are dedicated to enthusiastically supporting the efforts and talent of unpublished writers of short fiction and growing the festival to become a significant Huron County and Canadian event that has an international appeal, reaching writers and readers who are passionate about Canadian writers and Munro?s significant contribution to literary masterworks.

Renewal is the 2012 theme and writers were encouraged to garner inspiration for their stories by, for, and about Canadians by sharing hope or expressing ideas for reform, revitalization or revival.

Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in each of an adult and teen (age 13-19 as of Aug.) category. Winners will be invited to read from their entries at a gala event during the 2012 festival weekend, Sept. 28 to 30. Winners will be announced at the gala event.

The final details of workshops and gala events and celebrations continue to be posted to the website. For additional weekend agenda information, email kstewart@ezlink.ca or call 519-523-4328 or 519-441-7629.
