Darwin?s notes on marriage discovered, ?better than a dog anyhow?

Charles Darwin's notes on marriage have recently been made publicDespite devoting his life to science, Charles Darwin had a long and reportedly happy marriage, fathering 10 children after proposing to his cousin Emma Wedgwood in 1838.

But the naturalist and father of modern evolutionary theory wasn't always sold on matrimony, writing out a list of pros and cons on marriage in a journal entry that was first made public on Tuesday.

The musings are part of the Darwin Correspondence Project, an online database of Darwin's writings, and were discovered by the site Brain Pickings.

Using the back of a letter from a friend, Darwin sketched out some of his thoughts in a journal entry dated April 7, 1838.

Amongst the pros: "constant companion," "charms of music & female chit-chat"

And some of the perceived cons: "means limited, Feel duty to work for money. London life, nothing but Society, no country, no tours, no large Zoolog. Collect. no books. ? Could I live in London like a prisoner?"

In July, just four months before his proposal, Darwin returned to his list.

On the possibility of having children: "Children ?(if it Please God) ? Constant companion, (& friend in old age) who will feel interested in one, ? object to be beloved & played with. ? ?better than a dog anyhow."

But after several back and forth meditations, Darwin eventually reached the following conclusion: "Marry ? Mary ? Marry Q.E.D."

And, in fact, Darwin and Wedgwood stayed together for the next 44 years, until the time of his death in 1882.

5.?It?s worth recalling how Ryan became a semi-household name. It wasn?t a Republican strategy to put him forward. As Ryan Lizza?recounts?in his New Yorker profile of Ryan, it was a Democratic strategy to put Ryan forward. Ryan, he writes, ?was caught between the demands of the Republican leaders, who wanted nothing to do with his Roadmap, and his own belief that the Party had to offer a sweeping alternative vision to Obama?s. Ryan soon had an unlikely ally, in Obama himself.? While Republicans were trying to keep Ryan quiet, the Obama administration was trying to make him famous. They saw his plans as the clearest distillation of the GOP?s governing philosophy ? and they thought it would drive voters towards the Democrats. We?ll know in November whether that was a genius strategy or an epic miscalculation?

7. Ryan upends Romney?s whole strategy. Until now, Romney?s play has been very simple:?Don?t get specific. In picking Ryan, he has yoked himself to each and every one of Ryan?s specifics. And some of those specifics are quite?surprising. For instance: Ryan has told the Congressional Budget Office that his budget will bring all federal spending outside Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security to 3.75 percent of GDP by 2050. That means defense, infrastructure, education, food safety, basic research, and food stamps ? to name just a few ? will be less than four percent of GDP in 2050. To get a sense for how unrealistic that is, Congress has never permitted defense spending to fall below three percent of GDP, and Romney has pledged that he?ll never let defense spending fall beneath four percent of GDP. It will be interesting to hear him explain away the difference.

8. It?s not just that Romney now has to defend Ryan?s budget. To some degree, that was always going to be true. What he will now have to defend is everything else Ryan has proposed. Ryan was, for instance, the key House backer of Social Security privatization. His bill,?The Social Security Personal Savings Guarantee and Prosperity Act of 2005, was so aggressive that it was?rejected?by the Bush administration. Now it?s Romney?s bill to defend. In Florida.

Like it or not, America, we?re going to be talking a lot about deficits, debt, the federal budget, and the fundamental role of government in this election.? While the Ryan pick might not be great for future bipartisanship in developing compromise deficit-reduction plans, it will sure get people talking about, and hopefully thinking more about, what they expect the government to do for them and how they are willing to pay for it.

I am finishing my liberal arts bachelor?s degree soon and thinking about my career path. I believe that someday I would like to be self employed, not sure if I want to be an entrepreneur, but I could run my own business in some way maybe. What are your thoughts on that? How do I know if I am cut out for self employment? Are some people better at it than others?

Answer:
Dear Jim,

This question is an interesting one for people to think about before they jump into the risks and rewards of self employment. The more common career path for someone out of college is to become employed at an organization; perhaps a business, educational center, human services agency, and so on. Some companies are global and very large, others are mid-range, and of course there are small ones, too. You could even find yourself employed at a family owned business with just a few employees.

Employment in an organization

The advantage of being employed by an organization is that for whatever your career, there is already a structure in place. On the financial end there will be a salary and perhaps benefits such as health insurance. There is a job description, a supervisor (generally), specific responsibilities and expectations. Many jobs can only be done as part of a group, company, or organization. For instance, you won?t find a self-employed fire-fighter!

Self employment

However, many types of careers can work for both self-employment and also working for others. Accounting is a good example of this kind of job. As an accountant, you might choose to work for an accounting firm, in an accounting department in an organization, or in your own business. Writers, musicians, teachers, business owners, psychologists, social workers, literary agents, architects, graphic designers, computer programmers, and lawyers might similarly choose to either work for a company or agency, or to start their own practice.

Here are some questions to consider about your personality style: Do you like a defined structure or are you comfortable with ambiguity? Do you like to work independently or as part of a team? Are you comfortable with risk? Do you have good self management skills? Are you willing to do what it takes?

People with a personality oriented towards self-employment tend to thrive on risk, have good self-structuring skills, are autonomous and independent, can tolerate ambiguity, and are willing to work hard for their business.

On a practical level, you will also need to assess your financial and educational resources if you choose to become self employed. Do you have the right credentials, licensing, and experience for the field you are choosing? Service professions such as psychology, accounting, social work, consulting, and tutoring might not have as much overhead costs as say, starting a franchise, but you must have the proper training and credentials.

If you are going to be self-employed in a business that focuses on products, you will need to assess your costs. Local courses at a community college or library could help you learn how to create a suitable business plan.

In summary, there are some wonderful advantages of self-employment. It can be a thrill to be your own boss. On the other hand, there is a steep learning curve and you will be challenged to become comfortable with risk, ambiguity, self-reliance and self-structuring. Perhaps having a mentor or coach would be helpful in your journey.
