Without China Mobile, Apple's a Footnote Against Samsung

Apple might currently have the lead for worldwide smartphone sales, but it's still playing catch-up within one of the larger regional nuts the iPhone has yet to truly crack: China.

While China Telecom might have started selling the iPhone 4S two days ago, the third-largest telecom carrier gives Apple but a foothold into China's market of approximately 988 million mobile users.

If Apple wants to grow its current 7.5-percent market share to rival Samsung's 24.3-percent share, it's going to have to go big or go home. And that means opening up its smartphones to support the particular carrier settings of China Mobile, the nation's largest mobile operator.

More importantly, Apple needs to do it soon. According to a report from Bloomberg, smartphone shipments are expected to jump 52 percent to 137 million units. And when that happens, China will overtake the U.S. for the world's largest smartphone market.

Additionally, Samsung isn't slowing down. Its 24.3-percent market share ? built as a result of the company's strategic decision to support all of China's "Big Three" carriers, or China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Mobile ? represents a difference of nearly 17 percent between it and Apple. According to Gartner, this difference has almost doubled from figures seen in the third quarter, helped out in part by a drop in Apple's market share from 10.4 percent to its current 7.5 percent.

Just how important is China Mobile to Apple's equation? According to Bloomberg, China Mobile's subscriber base is a whopping 655 million users ? or approximately 66 percent of the total mobile subscribers in China, period.

Why, then, isn't Apple playing ball? In a word, standards. China Mobile wants the iPhone, but it operates its 3G service on a proprietary network technology called TD-SCDMA. While there's been talk that Apple's considered building a TD-SCDMA-supported iPhone , there's a greater likelihood that Apple plans to hold out until China Mobile officially launches its 4G TD-LTE network.

Or, for that matter, the iPhone 5. If Apple's to-be-announced smartphone runs Qualcomm's recently announced, fifth-generation Gobi chipset, the phone could support a plethora of networking technologies at once: TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE, LTE on FDD and TDD networks, and both HSPA+ and EV-DO. In other words, Apple could release a single iPhone device that supports a wide range of networks instead of having to customize various iPhone models to fit the peculiarities of different wireless carriers and regions.

And it would sure seem fitting for Apple to announce a much-anticipated, brand-new iPhone in conjunction with a debut on the world's largest wireless carrier?

Oil up at $107 amid Greek debt talks, Iran tension

Oil prices climbed to above $107 a barrel Thursday on a combination of optimism about the Greek debt crisis and concerns that tensions over Iran's nuclear program are lowering crude supplies.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for April delivery was up 90 cents to $107.06 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.46 to settle at $106.16 per barrel in New York on Wednesday.

In London, Brent crude was up $1.26 at $125.38 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Commodities were in step with rising equity markets, optimistic that Greece will be able to complete a bond swap plan with private investors aimed at cutting ?107 billion ($140 billion) off its national debt.

Crude has risen from $96 last month to near 10-month highs because of worries a military conflict over Iran's nuclear program would disrupt global oil supplies. The U.S. and Europe have imposed sanctions while Iran has threatened to halt crude tankers passing through the Persian Gulf.

Fueling the concerns, Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Europe's largest oil company, said Thursday it would soon stop buying oil from Iran, well ahead of a July deadline imposed by the European Union.

Iran agreed Tuesday to let international nuclear inspectors into its facilities. However, diplomats said Wednesday that satellite images of an Iranian military facility appear to show trucks and earth-moving vehicles at the site, indicating an attempted cleanup of radioactive traces possibly left by tests of a nuclear-weapon trigger.

"It is extremely unlikely that this latest round of possible negotiations will fundamentally reset Iranian relations with the West," commodities analyst Amrita Sen of Barclays Capital said in a report.

Low spare production capacity and crude inventories are also bolstering prices. According to the International Energy Agency, crude inventories in developed countries are now more than 65 million barrels below their average over the last five years and European stocks are at a 15-year low.

"It is not all 'geopolitical risk premium' in oil prices," Sen said. "The lack of spare capacity and inventories is playing an equally large part."

Analysts said the widening spread between the Nymex and Brent contracts, now over $18, could be attributed to rising U.S. inventories, where crude supplies grew by 800,000 barrels, or 0.2 percent, to 345.7 million barrels last week.

In the United States, "stocks have increased in six out of the past seven weeks," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

Signs of an improving U.S. economy have helped raise oil from $75 in October. On Wednesday, payroll provider ADP estimated companies added 216,000 workers last month. The government is scheduled to announce its February jobs figures Friday.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 2.85 cents to $3.2479 per gallon and gasoline futures added 2.59 cents to $3.3133 per gallon. Natural gas fell 0.7 cent to $2.295 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Gigabyte U2442 Ultrabook hands-on (video)

First they announce, then we touch. Such is the way of the technology trade show. In our eager paws this time is the U2442 Ultrabook from Gigabyte. Strangely, it was running Windows 8 Consumer Preview, which is all good and well, but the 1600 x 900 pixel display wasn't being shown to its full potential. A shame, as it would have been nice to see how the latest Microsoft OS might actually look in real use. The device itself is a mix of aluminum and plastic, which gives it a mixed-quality feel, and there's definitely some weight to the Ultrabook, although it's nowhere near the heaviest laptop we saw today.

Despite being an Ultrabook, the U2442 has dedicated GeForce GT 640M graphics, which will certainly please those who aren't fans of the whole SoC thing. Also, unlike many other devices it competes with, the Gigabyte also touts a full-size Ethernet port along with those USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports we learned about this morning -- no nasty dongles to carry around and lose with this guy. All we know on release is that it's slated for sometime this summer, with pricing expected to be in the $1,000 range. Shimmy on over the break for the hands-on video, or take a peek at the gallery below to see the Ultrabook in all its full-size-port glory.

How to Improve Your Self-Esteem | Golden Wisdom Nuggets

The word esteem comes from the Latin word aestimare, which means to fix the value of something. Using this definition, self-esteem can be said to describe how one values one?s self.

Nathaniel Branden, a founder of the self-esteem movement in psychology, has defined self-esteem as the sum of self-confidence (a feeling of personal capacity) and self-respect (a feeling of personal worth). Accordingly, the concept of self-esteem not only encompasses one?s ability to cope with the challenges of life but also one?s sense of being worthy of happiness.

Thus, while most people equate self-confidence with self-esteem, although related they are not the same.

In fact, many self-confident people suffer from issues of low self-esteem. One need only think of the numerous celebrities, politicians, and other public figures that exhibit complete self-confidence in front of others who are extremely unhappy and have a very low opinion of their self-worth when not in front of an audience or camera.

Fortunately, the ability to develop a healthy sense of self-esteem is inherent to all human beings. And the mere fact of being alive is the foundation of your right to pursue happiness.

Since self-esteem is simply how you value yourself, you have it within yourself to improve your self-esteem whenever you?re willing to undertake the work necessary to do so.

And, since your self-esteem and your ability to live a happy and fulfilling life are directly linked, the sooner you work to improve your self-esteem the sooner you can move forward in life with confidence and optimism.

Causes and Symptoms of Low Self-Esteem

Unfortunately, low self-esteem issues are quite common. Issues of negative self-worth affect people regardless of their gender, race, culture, class, or even their success.

It is not uncommon for self-esteem issues to be related to a particular aspect or sphere of one?s life. For example, you may feel that you are in the top 1% of professionals in your field but feel unworthy of love and affection in your personal life.

Similarly, self-esteem issues are commonly caused by specific occurrences, such as a job loss, the end of a relationship, or the death of a loved one.

This being said, more often than not our self-esteem and our ability to bounce back from negative life events are determined by our childhood experiences with parents and other significant adults.

Children are completely dependent on adults to meet their needs and so, in a very real sense, they are shaped by the ability of their caretakers to meet those needs. Children whose needs go unmet and who are not valued for who they are often develop low self-esteem.

Because they do not value themselves, they often see unfair treatment, criticism, blame, and rejection wherever the go. They may also feel ?bad,? like ?failures,? and ?unlovable,? as well as experience unhealthy feelings of depression, guilt, and anger that they express in destructive ways toward themselves and others.

Additional indications of self-esteem issues include a lack of motivation and enthusiasm about life, commonly feeling tired, thinking negatively about your opportunities and abilities, or feeling depressed or hopeless.

If you?re suffering from low self-esteem, you may:

* Believe that you have to meet certain standards or achieve certain objectives in order to feel good about yourself

* Feel that how other people view you and whether or not they approve of you determines your self-worth

* Think that trying to change who you are is a hopeless endeavor

* Judge those who fail as unworthy and deserving of failure

* Focus on the negative when trying something new, taking a risk, or when describing yourself to others

Focusing on the negative and always believing the inner critic can keep us from experiencing all that life has to offer. If you believe others? opinions of you or your performance determines your self-worth, you?ve got a lot to learn.

Fortunately, there is a lot of hope for change, if you?re willing to do some work.

Improving Your Self-Esteem

In order to improve your self-esteem you have to learn to accept your shortcomings, identify and appreciate your positive attributes, as well as change your thinking and perspective.

While there are numerous techniques and self-help resources that can help you improve your self-esteem, there is little in the way of a replacement for the benefits brought by attending professional self-esteem counseling or psychotherapy.

Let?s face it, if you could have improved your self-esteem on your own, you likely would have already done so.

A professional counselor or therapist can help you challenge the negative thoughts and beliefs that lead to low self-esteem, change the way you talk to yourself about yourself, and reconnect with your authentic self rather than focus on the person you believe you?re supposed to be.

Self-esteem is a fluid concept. It is not a goal in itself that, once achieved, unlocks the key to happiness. We are all, in a sense, a ?work in progress,? and learning to develop and maintain a healthy self-esteem takes hard work and practice.

In the end, it is entirely up to you whether you decide to go through life with a low sense of self-worth or develop a healthy self-esteem that allows you to live life to its fullest.

Self-esteem cannot be ?given? to you by anyone. You must first take it upon yourself to improve your self-esteem if you?re serious about improving your life. When you?re ready, optimism, confidence, and happiness can be yours, and professional self-esteem counseling and psychotherapy can help.

Why You Need Boat Insurance

Some people simply overlook boat insurance. They think that

Article Body:

Some people simply overlook boat insurance. They think that nothing bad is going to happen, when in reality, bad things often happen involving boats!

If you own a boat, you need boat insurance. In fact, many states now require boat owners to carry Watercraft Liability insurance before they transport or operate a boat. If your boat has been financed, your lender will almost always require you to carry full coverage boat insurance.

Again, most people don?t think anything bad will happen ? but bad things do indeed occur!

Vandalism is one problem that you may encounter. This is especially true if you dock your boat in a marina. Vandalism can also occur when you park your boat at your home, or at a hotel when traveling.

When you shop for insurance, make sure that vandalism is covered on your policy. Most issuers of boat insurance will only offer you the Watercraft Liability ? but in most cases, you need more coverage than that! Theft is another possibility. Cars are stolen all the time ? but boats are stolen as well. In fact, stealing a boat is easier than stealing a car!

Boat insurance should cover you in the event of vandalism, theft, sinking, fire, storms, capsizing, stranding, collision, and explosion. Furthermore, the insurance should cover the boat, the motor, and the trailer used to transport the boat. The boat should be covered no matter who is operating the boat, as long as they are legally allowed to operate the vessel.

Boat insurance will typically cover you in the event of malfunction as well. If something happens to your motor, it should be covered by your insurance. It should also cover you in the event that your boat needs to be towed back to shore.

What you are covered for depends on what type of coverage you purchased through your insurance agent. For this reason, it is important to know what type of coverage is available. Not all insurance companies will offer all types of coverage, but they will offer Watercraft Liability and Watercraft Medical payments.

Watercraft liability covers you just like car liability insurance protects you in the event of an accident where you are found to be at fault. Medical payments will cover medical expenses incurred by you and the occupants of your boat that are the result of a boating accident in the covered water vessel.

Optional insurance usually includes coverage for reasonable repairs, emergency services to your boat, motor, or boat trailer, and wreck removal. Wreck removal is very important coverage to have. If you boat sinks, it will need to be raised before an insurance company can access the damages and pay your claim. This is very expensive, and in most states, the law requires you to remove wrecked or sunken vessels.

Boats may be luxury items ? but they are very expensive luxury items.

Repairing or replacing a boat may not be something that you can easily afford ? but in most cases, you will find that boat insurance is quite affordable. However, if you are thinking in terms of cost, and you think that you cannot afford the boat coverage, you can be certain that you will not be able to afford to repair or replace the boat either!

No matter how you look at it, you need boat insurance, even if you just purchase the watercraft liability coverage. Again, most states now require this liability coverage for water vessels, and if the boat is financed, the optional coverage may be required as well.

Discuss your boat insurance coverage needs with your insurance agent to determine what coverage is right for you and your boat.
