Write, write, write: Script guru Michael Hauge on the hero's journey

After about a decade spent in the marvelously mad world of screenwriting, you'll know all the terms, you'll know about structure, you'll know what they want to hear in meetings and you'll know how to get it across.?

After the second decade (as is the case with me), all of the above is pretty much internalized - you don't think about it anymore, it's become part of who you are. You're also in a place where you'll want to go your own creative ways, challenge yourself, break a few rules - and you can do all of that because you know the essentials inside out.

But as a beginner all that stuff, the books, the seminars, the workshops, the dos and don'ts - it can seriously wear you down and/or scare you off. Here's a few thoughts that'll hopefully encourage you to NOT quit (at least not before you've given it a decade or so).

And below's a series of roughly 4min clips by script guru Michael Hauge. I have to admit he pisses me off right off the bat - his first words are "The first 10% ..." - and you'll see he structures it all very ?concretely. I can't stand numbers and I most certainly don't think of scripts in percentages ... but you need to realize that the man's got a point - it's a business and if producers think in percentages, it is essential that you understand and speak their language, too.

So view the clips, they're sound - and what I particularly like - they lead you through the theory of the hero's journey with the concrete example of "The Firm". So watch, take from it what you can and then get back to writing!

Take Yourself To The Next Level With These Self Improvement Tips ...

How about taking a few minutes of your time in order to learn simple steps on improving the rest of your life? If you pay attention to what we have to say, that is what this article can do for you. Read the tips and tricks that we have provided for you, so that you can start to reach your true potential.

Don?t look at your outside beauty; seek out inner beauty. Wearing the latest styles or looking like a movie star does not make a real difference. Your personality will be what matters in the long run. Try and change the person you are inside rather than focusing on the outside.

Identify what is keeping you from being successful. Doing this is extremely hard for a lot of people. The first step in dealing with our weaknesses is actually identifying them. Your future will look much brighter if you acquire new strengths.

TIP! Set realistic goals that you can accomplish, and you?ll enjoy life so much more. Figure out what you do and do not do well, and you will learn a lot about yourself.

When working on your self improvement, it is often helpful to see what others have done. You can avoid both personal and business mistakes by knowing the trials that others have faced. Knowing that other people have succeeded at the same goal will make it seem more attainable to you.

It isn?t possible to care for someone else at your own expense. No matter your path, or whether you?re failing or thriving, take time out to restore and rest yourself.

Prospective employers will be more concerned as to whether you can do the job well. There are only very few exceptions to this rule, such as working with a large financial institution. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree that will open up opportunities for you.

TIP! Change should be a conscious choice, and is in fact a result of it. We need to choose the change if we expect to really grow.

Emergency Fund

Begin a fund for emergency purposes. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund. By putting aside only a few dollars each week, you can rapidly build a respectable emergency fund. These reserves can be of great assistance now and in the future, because the amount owed will drop, rather than build.

Leadership is essential in your personal development. Although there are many different definitions of leadership, the most common being ?influence?. Examine yourself as a leader. Think about the circumstances that have had the most influence in your life. What changes did those events bring forth in you? What do you feel makes you a good team player? By knowing yourself and your motives better, you can more easily integrate into a leadership role with others.

TIP! Fostering a strict sense of self discipline is a great way to improve yourself. Your body yearns to give into temptations, but you can control the desires with practice.

You can be unnecessarily stressed if you overact to situations. Think about the situation, and try to find constructive ways to deal with it. If a mistake is the issue, there are ways to correct it or cope with living with your mistake. When you start feeling anxious about a situation, focus on the positive things, not the negative ones.

Follow your own principles as strictly as you can. Your personal beliefs create the foundation for who you are. If you have good reason to have these beliefs, you will feel more confident and grow your self esteem by adhering to these beliefs and principles. This will also promote consistency in your life and actions, which is a trait almost everyone finds admirable.

Begin a special savings for emergencies. Most of us depend on credit cards to pay for unexpected expenses. All you will need to do is save a couple of dollars per week. This fund will help you stay out of debt if you have to face an emergency.

TIP! Your willpower can help you find more positive things in your life. Your attitude towards others will affect what happens to you.

Regular Exercise

Exercise even if you are at your ideal weight. There are many other benefits from regular exercise. For instance, regular exercise is a great way to boost your mood.

You should shoot to be the best at whatever it is that you do. Follow your passion to the greatest possible aspirations. You can?t be the best at everything, but you can inspire people in the same field as you. Enhance your standing in your niche, and your self-esteem will climb too.

TIP! Part of setting goals to better yourself is having an idea of where you want your life to go. Having long-term goals is great, because you could have a big change in your perspective.

When you are actively trying to improve yourself, failing to do well at something can hurt your self-esteem more than it otherwise would. However, failure is really an opportunity to grow as a person. Failure is only another way of learning about your strengths and weaknesses. Look at failure as another opportunity for you to improve and overcome.

As hard as it may seem, you must eliminate worry from your life. Most of the things you worry about never materialize, and creating them in the present is of no value to your self improvement. Instead of worrying, consider the worst case scenario, and start taking concrete steps to address that worst case. You will then be prepared and able to move forward.

One simple step to your personal development is doing things for the benefit of other people. You can cultivate a strong, positive character, by learning how to make sacrifices for the sake of helping others. When making sacrifices that help others without hurting your well-being, you can become that kind person that you wanted to be.

TIP! Often, the enemy of happiness is stress. When our minds are busy dealing with stress, we are causing damage to our entire body, both mentally and physically.

Try to make each day more excellent than the previous one. Discover innovative ways to increase your character development. Focus on a specific task that you want to do better today than yesterday.

Staying positive takes a lot of willpower and it might mean that if you are positive towards others, then good things will come to you. For this reason, it is important to wish only positive things for the people in your life. You are less likely to get burdened with bad feelings if you are striving to stay positive.

Are you having a difficult time meeting someone that you want to share your life with? Use the net to jump start your search. Almost half of all couples, about 40%, met their partner online. You may find one that is looking for someone like you. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

TIP! Sexual capitol is an important new trait that?s being researched. This means using your charm rather than your sexuality to acquire things you want.

Therapy might be beneficial if your problems are severe. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist. Sometimes, simply talking through your problems can help you conquer them. Reading even the best self-help book cannot start up a back-and-forth dialog, the way a therapy session can.

Seek out those with similar positive attitudes. This will reinforce the aspects of your personality that you are seeking to develop, while allowing you to distance yourself from toxic individuals in your life.

Everybody makes mistakes, and making healthy food choices is definitely one field in which mistakes get made. Admit your poor choices, and move on with your life.

TIP! Failure at some task can seem like a devastating injury to your self confidence. However, failure is really an opportunity to grow as a person.

There is no way to make everyone in your life happy, so it is best to focus on first pleasing yourself. This doesn?t mean that you should only think of yourself, but in some cases, you really need to put yourself first. Whatever you do, make sure you follow your own values. The more you are a person who you like and respect, the happier you?ll be.

This information is so great that you probably are itching to not only put it into practice for yourself but share it with your loved ones, too. Diligently applying the suggestions in this article can generate positive changes you?ll enjoy for the entirety of your life. When you dedicate the time and determination to making serious personal change, the benefits are endless.

Do not overdo it when you are trying to achieve your personal development goal. Take your best shot, but know when you have reached your limit. You need to be careful about your physical health even while you are striving to achieve your goals. You will not be able to continue improving yourself if you don?t take care of your body.

TIP! Always have the attitude that you are worth it when working on your personal development plan. You need to be aware that you owe that to yourself.

Oil falls as traders weigh China data, 2013 demand

The price of oil slipped to near $95 a barrel Friday but remained near four-month highs after new data showed China's economy rebounded in the final quarter of last year, suggesting an increase in energy demand.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for February delivery was down 26 cents to $95.23 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $1.25 to finish at $95.49 a barrel. That was the highest close for crude on the Nymex since Sept. 17 and a result of the positive economic reports out of the U.S.

"Investors were prompted to some profit-taking to lock in recent gains, while the markets try to digest the Chinese economic data that slightly improved market sentiment" said a report from Sucden Financial Research in London.

China's economy grew 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, up from the previous quarter's 7.4 percent. In December, retail sales and factory output growth both accelerated, the National Bureau of Statistics reported.

The figures suggest increased energy demand, a key driver of oil prices. But overshadowing markets were concerns that the U.S. could face a new economic crisis if political leaders fail to resolve discord over spending cuts and the country's borrowing limit, which needs to be raised to avoid an unprecedented federal default.

Higher expectations for oil demand in China also contributed to an upwardly revised oil consumption forecast from the International Energy Agency.

Global oil demand is expected to rise to 90.8 million barrels a day this year, the Paris-based IEA said in its monthly oil market report released Friday. That's 930,000 daily barrels more than in 2012 and 240,000 barrels a day higher than the agency's previous forecast released in December.

The IEA said that economic figures for China had in recent months raised concerns about growth, but that seems to have changed. "Recent data suggest the tide may have begun to turn," it said in the report.

The IEA described market conditions as tighter than expected, with oil production in Saudi Arabia at the end of 2012 relatively weak. Analysts described that as a call to producing nations to keep supply up.

"This IEA report is basically a message to Saudi Arabia: 'Please, please, don't cut further,'" said Olivier Jakob, an analyst with Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Traders were also keeping an eye on the hostage crisis in southern Algeria. Algerian forces launched a raid to free hostages being held by militants at a remote natural gas facility. Casualties were reported. Spanish, Norwegian and British oil companies have evacuated workers from energy facilities in the country, which produces both natural gas and crude oil.

Meanwhile, brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 46 cents to $110.64 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline was down 1.36 cent to $2.7689 a gallon.

? Natural gas added 1.9 cents to $3.513 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil lost 1.01 cents at $3.0044 a gallon.

GitHub Passes The 3 Million Developer Mark

github-logoGitHub has surpassed the 3 million-developer mark, a milestone for the collaborative platform for application development.?GitHub said it happened Monday night on the first day of the company's?all-hands winter summit. Launched?in April 2008, GitHub?celebrated?its first million users in September 2011. The company hit the 2 million mark in August 2012, just short of a year later. How many users GitHub draws in the next 12 months is anybody's guess, but it's fair to say that it will at least double or perhaps even triple.

Trending in 2013: What does IT hold for us this year? | Alvarez ...

Predicting the future is more art than science, and that?s especially true when you look at technology trends.? Who could?ve predicted the impact of the smartphone a decade ago or the way that the Internet has impacted every facet of our lives? ?Bob Metcalfe, the man who invented Ethernet and founded 3Com, once predicted that the Internet would ?? go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse? which goes to show that even smart people can sometimes be wrong.

That said, there are some intriguing information technology (IT) trends that will make 2013 a fun and exciting year, if you like that sort of thing.? Let me share with you my top five predictions:

  • Tablet computers will replace laptops. ?This trend, which started in 2012, will accelerate dramatically this year as manufacturers release their tablets built with Microsoft?s Windows 8 operating system and Google releases the next version of Android.? Not be left out of the conversation, Apple will release a new version of the iPad. ?(Bonus prediction: ?Touch screens will be everywhere, even on desktops and laptops.)
  • Driving automation will make its debut.? Google has been experimenting with driverless cars for years and many automobile manufacturers have been testing cars that use technology to essentially provide the driver a cyber-copilot. ?This is the year that we see production vehicles show up with enhanced automation, improving safety and making driving less of a chore.
  • Big Data will get small. ?Big data is the latest buzzword and it refers to the vast amount of information that companies are collecting which could be used to improve everything from supply chain management, to the customer experience, to the bottom line.? 2013 is the year that small businesses get smart about Big Data and start exploiting the information they?ve been collecting for years using inexpensive, easy to use tools. ?Google is already doing it ? online and for free.
  • Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity planning takes center stage. Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Isaac, the drought and floods in the Midwest ? all of those things led to thousands of companies going out of business because they weren?t prepared.? We?ve been downsizing and rightsizing and we?re all now running lean and mean, which leaves very little margin for error. ?We need to be ready when bad things happen and the technologies like Cloud Computing and flexible Internet access make it easy to get ready.
  • Even small businesses take security seriously. ?The threat of cyber-attack was once something only the big boys had to worry about. ?Not anymore. ?The quaint old days of the hacker seeking glory have been overtaken by organized crime rings who use the Internet to steal money, data and anything else they can get, and ? like any good predator ? they prefer to target the small and unprotected rather than tangle with better prepared prey. ?Forewarned is forearmed and smaller businesses won?t want to be victims.

Chances are, at least a couple of these will prove to be true for you.? Let me know if you have your own predictions you?d like to share.

U. S. Federal Safe Routes to School program reduces child injuries by more than 40 percent in New York City

Jan. 14, 2013 ? The national Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program was funded by Congress in 2005 in an effort to create safe environments for American children to walk or bike to school. Has the program been effective? In New York City, most definitely, according to a new study conducted at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health that evaluated the program here. Researchers found that the annual rate of injury to school-age pedestrians ages 5-19 fell 44% during the peak times for walking to school, in neighborhoods where the program was implemented. Significantly, the injury rate did not drop in parts of the city where the SRTS safety program was not in place.

Findings of the report are published online in Pediatrics.

The researchers analyzed motor vehicle crash data for 169,000 pedestrian injuries between 2001 and 2010 for different age groups and neighborhoods with and without SRTS interventions to assess the program's effectiveness.

Interventions for reducing pedestrian injury included new traffic and pedestrian signals, the addition of exclusive pedestrian crossing times, speed bumps, speed boards, high-visibility crosswalks, and new parking regulations. More than 120 NYC schools were selected by the NYC Department of Transportation for the interventions because they had the highest rates of pedestrian injury.

The researchers created a school-travel time indicator variable to further identify crashes that occurred during days and hours when school-aged children would be traveling to or from school. This time period was defined as 7 AM to 9 AM or 2 PM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday between September and June.

"Our data show that interventions to make the built environment safer can greatly reduce injuries to children as they walk to school," says the lead author of the study, Charles DiMaggio, PhD, associate professor of Epidemiology and research director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia.

The Safe Routes to School program was funded through 2012, and is now in place in all 50 states at approximately 10% of elementary and secondary schools. Under the current federal transportation bill, MAP-21, the Safe Routes program will no longer have dedicated funding. It is now one of a number of possible programs eligible for funding based on state and local priorities, making it "even more important to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of programs like Safe Routes to School," according to Dr. DiMaggio.

"Our study provides compelling empirical evidence that is essential to guiding policy makers," says senior author Guohua Li, MD, DrPH, Mailman School professor of Epidemiology and Anesthesiology and director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention. "It indicates that the Safe Routes to School program has made a marked difference in improving the safety of school-age children in New York City."

Hewlett-Packard creates Converged Cloud unit, gets serious about the internet

Nearly a year after HP announced its cloud computing plans, it has finally gotten serious about the internet by creating a specialized business unit around it, according to AllThingsD. Dubbed the Converged Cloud unit, it'll be headed by Saar Gillai who has been promoted to senior VP. The unit will manage all things cloud, from hardware and services to its marketing and networking partners. Judging from its recent financial woes, perhaps this renewed gamble on internet services will push it further into the black.

Model for brain signaling flawed

A new study out today in the journal Science turns two decades of understanding about how brain cells communicate on its head. The study demonstrates that the tripartite synapse ? a model long accepted by the scientific community and one in which multiple cells collaborate to move signals in the central nervous system ? does not exist in the adult brain.

"Our findings demonstrate that the tripartite synaptic model is incorrect," said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., lead author of the study and co-director of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Center for Translational Neuromedicine. "This concept does not represent the process for transmitting signals between neurons in the brain beyond the developmental stage."

The central nervous system is home to many different cells. While neurons tend to garner the most attention, it is only recently that the function of the brain's other cells have been fully appreciated. Glial cells known as astrocytes, for example, had long been considered mainly the "glue" that helps hold all the other cells in the central nervous system in place. Scientists now understand that that these cells are essential to maintaining a healthy environment in the brain by helping carry out functions such as removing waste.

"Neurons are like a racing car," said Nedergaard. "While the driver gets all the credit, there are often 20 people behind the scenes that are optimizing his or her success."

However, when it comes to moving signals between neurons in the brain it turns out that the scientists may have vastly exaggerated the role of the astrocyte.

Neurons are connected to each other via axons or "arms" that extend from the cell's main body. Communication between neighboring neurons takes place where axons meet other nerve cells ? called a synaptic juncture ? when an electrical charge causes chemicals called neurotransmitters or glutamate to be released by one cell and "read" by receptors on the surface of the opposite. The two cells do not actually touch, so the chemicals messages must pass through a gap in the synaptic juncture. The space around this gap is insulated by astrocytes.

Under the tripartite synapse model, both astrocytes and neurons were believed to play a role in the "conversation" between cells. This understanding was largely based on animal models which showed active receptors and neurotransmission between not only the nerve cells but also the nearby astrocytes.

Specifically, a key neurotransmission receptor called metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) was observed to be present and active in astrocytes at the synaptic juncture. It was also observed that when the mGluR5 receptor was activated, the astrocytes would release chemical transmitters that were in turn read by the nerve cells. These findings led to the conclusion that astrocytes must in some manner modulate the signaling process between brain cells.

While this model has held sway for decades, scientists have long been frustrated by their inability to influence this process by targeting it with drugs.

"If this concept was correct, it should have given rise to a clinical trial by now," said Nedergaard. "It has not, which tells us that with so many labs work on this for 20 years that there must be something wrong."

One of the barriers to understanding precise mechanics of passing signals from one neuron to another has been the inability to observe this process in the adult brain. The tripartite synapse model was based ? in part ? by examining the activity in the brains of very young rodents. Adult rodents could not be similarly studied because the synapses in the brain would die before they could be fully analyzed. This ultimately led to the presumption that the signaling process that was witnessed in the young brain carried over to adulthood.

Collaborating with researchers at the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics, Nedergaard and her team developed a new 2-photon microscope that enables researchers to observe glia activity in the living brain. Using both this method and by analyzing the gene and protein expression in the brain the researchers discovered that the mGluR5 largely disappear in the glial cells of adult mice meaning that these cells do not directly respond to synaptic neuronal signalling, thus calling into question the concepts that drive most of ongoing research in the field.

"The process of neuron-glial transmission as conceived by the tripartite synapse model appears to just be a simplistic signaling pathway that 'teaches' the synapse how to behave," said Nedergaard. "Once the brain matures, it goes away."

White House: Thumbs down on Death Star

20th Century Fox

The Death Star was a fearsome battle station in the Star Wars saga - but purely fictional.

By Alan Boyle

The White House says building a Death Star would be an out-of-this-galaxy waste of money ??not only because it's against government policy to blow up planets, but also because the United States already has access to a space station as well as a laser-wielding space robot.

Today's official statement on the Death Star issue, titled "This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For," was written by Paul Shawcross, chief of the science and space branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget. It comes in response to a?"We the People" petition?that?called on the federal government to start building a "Star Wars"-style Death Star battle station by 2016.

"By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense," the petition read.

The petition garnered more than 25,000 online signatures within a month,?partly due to a signing campaign that went viral on 4chan, Reddit and Twitter. Under the Obama administration's rules for the "We the People" program, that required the White House to come up with a reply.

Shawcross and his colleagues clearly rose to the challenge, with an essay that should satisfy the policy geeks as well as the "Star Wars" geeks. Here's the full text:

This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For
"The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

  • The construction of the Death Star?has been estimated?to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
  • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
  • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

"However, look carefully (here's how) and you'll notice something already floating in the sky ? that's no Moon, it's a Space Station! Yes, we already have a giant, football field-sized?International Space Station?in orbit around the Earth that's helping us learn how humans can live and thrive in space for long durations. The Space Station has six astronauts ? American, Russian, and Canadian ? living in it right now, conducting research, learning how to live and work in space over long periods of time, routinely welcoming visiting spacecraft and repairing onboard garbage mashers, etc. We've also got two robot science labs ??one wielding a laser?? roving around Mars, looking at whether life ever existed on the Red Planet.

"Keep in mind, space is no longer just government-only. Private American companies, through?NASA's Commercial Crew and Cargo Program Office (C3PO), are ferrying cargo ? and soon, crew ? to space for NASA, and are pursuing?human missions to the Moon this decade.

"Even though the United States doesn't have anything that can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, we've got?two spacecraft leaving the Solar System?and we're building a?probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun. We are discovering?hundreds of new planets in other star systems?and building a much more?powerful successor to the Hubble Space Telescope?that will see back to the early days of the universe.

"We don't have a Death Star, but we do have?floating robot assistants?on the Space Station, a President who knows his way around a?light saber?and?advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building?Luke's arm, floating?droids, and quadruped?walkers.

"We are living in the future! Enjoy it. Or better yet, help build it by pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field. The President has held?the first-ever?White House?science fairs?and?Astronomy Night on the South Lawn?because he knows these domains are critical to our country's future, and to ensuring the United States continues leading the world in doing big things.

"If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

Update for 9:35 p.m. ET Jan. 11: The White House statement quickly sparked a Twitter response from Darth Vader himself: "A serious mistake, Mr. President. You can never have enough planet-sized lasers."

Update for 1:40 a.m. ET Jan. 12: NASA may brag about the space station and its laser-equipped Curiosity rover, but that's not enough, Death Star PR says in a Twitter update: "Until you put the laser and the space station together and start blowing up planets, you're not doing enough Science."?

A weekly roundup of small-business developments.

What?s affecting me, my clients and other small-business owners this week.

The Deal: A Not-So-Grand Bargain

A ?fiscal cliff? deal is reached and after all the drama this chart sums up the impact. One provision could head off a doubling of milk prices. Here?s what?s in it for small businesses. Jared Bernstein says the fiscal debate has killed the economic debate. Kevin Drum says we don?t have a spending problem, we have an aging problem. One blogger believes that the biggest beneficiaries of the resolution are puppies. Bruce Bartlett explains when the deficit will be fixed. John Boehner is re-elected House speaker. Hugh Hefner marries. These are the four business gangs that rule the country. Next up: the debt ceiling.

Happy New Year: Small-Business Predictions

This infographic shows what?s in store for small businesses in 2013. The editors at Springwise.com offer 10 business opportunities for the coming year. Here are 12 buzzwords you can expect to hear. Here are 20 quotations you can use to prosper. Here are 21 predictions from social media experts. Both Constant Contact and Marla Tabaka spot marketing trends they think will affect small businesses, including ?the rise of MomPopolies.? A Pennsylvania psychic counselor predicts an avalanche that ?will destroy many lives.? Amanda MacArthur suggests 12 worthwhile small-business resolutions. Here are the top five reasons your employees will quit. This video recaps 2012 in four minutes.

The Economy: Auto Sales Are Strong

Many economic bloggers ended 2012 feeling pessimistic. The Restaurant Performance Index contracted, and SurePayroll?s November small-business scorecard is down. Construction spending also fell, and small-business borrowing slowed. But manufacturing (pdf) picked up in December, and don?t forget that the drilling boom for shale oil is remaking America?s energy picture and has brought net oil imports to a 20-year low. Borrowing rates are as cheap as they have ever been in America, and domestic auto sales were very strong last month. The unemployment rate stays steady, online labor demand (pdf) increased, the private sector added 215,000 jobs, and the Philadelphia Fed?s leading indexes (pdf)? projected growth. A physics teacher imparts real life lessons.

Start-Up: A Well-Known Blogger Tries the Start-Up Life

These are 13 promising East Coast start-ups to watch in 2013. A start-up wants to be the Spotify for e-books. Bruno Aziza shares some advice from his start-up adventure: ?Unless you are working on something truly different, or have a compelling story to tell, nobody will pay attention. ? Unless you can truly add value, nobody cares.? This 15-year-old thinks he can reinvent how we consume news. A well-known blogger plans his own start-up. Jay Patani says interns are the unsung heroes of start-ups. Or maybe baby boomers are more essential?

Marketing: Content on the Cheap

Can you guess the most annoying and hated words and phrases of the year? (Yes, ?whatever? made one list, and so did ?YOLO? and ?fiscal cliff.?) An influential marketing blog picks the most influential marketing books. Andy Sernovitz offers a few suggestions for rescuing unsubscribers. Michael Stelzner explains why stories attract customers. Mathew Donald has five brochure-designing tips, including: ?Do not slack off during the proofreading process.? Marcus Sheridan has eight renegade methods to use content marketing to dominate your industry, including, ?Reward your competitors?: ?Stop pretending your competitors don?t exist. Your customers already know they exist, so find a way to deal with it, to your advantage.? Ryan Derousseau explains how to introduce a content strategy on the cheap.

Your People: Stupid Things Bosses Say

Cullen Roche examines what makes people successful. Jeff Schmitt says there are seven types of employees you should weed out, including the viruses: ?You can?t expect them to be slavishly sunny and loyal to you. But you can expect them to be helpful, respectful and protective toward each other.? Jeff Haden says there are eight stupid things bosses say to employees, including: ?Sure, I?ll be happy to talk to your brother about a job.? You won?t believe how many people applied to work at Comcast last year.

Management: The War on Fraud

A 16-year-old maker of motorcycles proves that passion trumps experience. In this economist?s guide to year-end charitable giving, Dean Karlan advises not to divide donations among many charities: ?If there is one that is doing the most good for the cause you care the most about, then every dollar you give to the one doing the second best work is a dollar not given to the one doing the best work!? Here?s how to beat ?the overwhelm? of entrepreneurship. Adrian Swinscoe says the relationships you have with existing customers are your keys to success. Volvo owners have the best credit scores. Daniel Hood files a dispatch from the war on fraud. Here are five ways to stay healthy at work.

Social Media: Twitter Tools

Here?s how to start your social media year off with a bang. Jeff Bullas lists six social media trends you should not ignore, including: ?Facebook will continue to strengthen its grip as the dominating and the de facto social network of choice.? A webinar explains how to leverage social media effectively and efficiently. Did you know there are still a few cool things you can do with your blog post after you hit publish? These are the top 20 Web sites every blogger should know and the six top Twitter tools for business. And if your business is not a big user of social media, don?t worry: you?re in good company.

Around the Country: Honk if You Love Someone

Avis buys Zipcar. Polaroid is creating branded retail stores. Texas was the best place for small-business job growth in 2012. Jeff Jordan wonders if American malls are dying (Russian malls certainly are not). One man goes on a quest to make a city smile: ?Honk if you love someone.? Entrepreneur magazine?s Growth Conference is this week in Dallas. Constant Contact and the City of Chicago Treasurer?s Office announce a small-business online marketing contest. Meet the ?poshest? entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley (even though they will probably be wiped out by climate change in the next 40 years). This week, 150,000 people are expected to converge on Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show.

Around the World: What?s Up in Iceland?

Indian manufacturing hits a six-month high. Chinese manufacturing expands. Unemployment falls in Spain. And do you ever wonder what?s really going on in Iceland? This may be the best review of ?Les Mis?rables? ever.

Technology: Michael Arrington Is Bored

Here are 10 objects that prove that 3-D printing will change the world, and Dylan Love lists the best 3-D printers. Michael Arrington is bored: ?Yeah, yeah, mobile. I get it. ? But really a lot of the mobile stuff out there is just radioactive decay from the iPhone launching in 2007. 2007! Old news! Ancient platforms!? Even so, enormous changes are on the horizon for the smartphone. These are the 15 best gadgets of 2012, and here are 13 technologies you won?t see in 2013. Steve Kovach says Windows phone users have one big problem. A bunch of well-known (and not so well-known) companies want us to go paperless in 2013. A mobile messaging app processed 18 billion messages on the last day of 2012.

Tweet of the Week

@AaronCBaker: I?m hoping they release some sweet beepers at?CES?this year

The Week?s Bests

Eric Barker says there are 10 things you should do every day to improve your life, including laugh: ?People who use humor to cope with stress have better immune systems, reduced risk of heart attack and stroke, experience less pain during dental work and live longer. Laughter should be like a daily vitamin.?

Scott Grannis says the fiscal cliff resolution goes a long way toward explaining why this has been the weakest recovery in history: ?The burden of our debt binge is already upon us because we have borrowed trillions of dollars to support consumption, rather than new investment. What matters in the future is how productively we spend the proceeds of future bond sales, not how we pay off the bonds we?ve already sold. We can make progress on the margin if we can reduce federal spending relative to the size of the economy, since that in turn will reduce the amount of the economy?s resources we waste. Allowing the private sector to increasingly decide how to spend the fruits of its labors will likely improve the overall productivity and strength of the economy, because the private sector is most likely smarter about how it spends its own money. We?ve got to get the government out of the way if we are to move forward.?

This Week?s Question: Will the fiscal cliff deal help or hurt your business?

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) - When spring semester classes begin on Jan. 14, 25 American University undergraduates will have some racy required reading to complete.

An American Studies course, which is already filled to capacity with a 10-person waiting list, will focus on the popular book trilogy ?50 Shades of Grey.?

The trilogy ?is a publishing phenomenon that has dramatically impacted American culture and sexual health,? the online course description says. ?Using the series as a case study, this course examines the interplay of sexuality, health, public relations and marketing. Topics covered include feminism, addiction, social media marketing, sexual expression versus sexual repression, targeting the mom demographic, domestic violence, literary criticism, and relationship and identity forming.?

The same adjunct instructor who will be teaching the ?50 Shades Trilogy? course, Stef Woods, also taught a ?Health and Activism? class in the fall, according to the Office of the Registrar. Woods? American University profile says she is a ?sexuality educator, writer, attorney, and breast cancer survivor and advocate? who writes about relationships, sexuality, health advocacy and cancer on her website, CityGirlBlogs.com.

Companion Animal Psychology: Will Grey Parrots Share?

A fascinating study by Franck P?ron and colleagues looks at
the question of whether or not grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) will share,
with each other or with a human. Two hand-reared parrots took part: Griffin,
the dominant bird who is 14 years old, and Arthur, who is 11. The birds live in
large individual cages in the same room as each other, and often take part in
studies of parrot cognition. This means they were well placed to understand the
task involved: choosing one of four coloured cups, each of which has a
different meaning.

For the purposes of this study, the cups were as follows:-

Green cup ? sharing. The bird and their partner both get a treat.

Pink cup ? selfish. The bird gets a treat but the partner does not.

Orange cup ? giving. The partner gets a treat, but they do not.

Violet cup ? null. No one gets a treat.

The treats varied, including pieces of cashew nut and almonds, and sometimes small candies. In the first experiment, the cups were arranged on a tray without the birds seeing what went under them. Two humans performed a demonstration session, so the birds could see what the results of different cup choices were. Then the experiment began. ?

The tray was presented to the first bird, who had to make a choice, and treats were distributed accordingly. Then the second bird got to make a choice. In total, there were fifty sessions, in which each bird got to make ten choices. Griffin led in 24 of the sessions, and Arthur led in the other 26 (it was meant to be equal, but there was a mistake).?

The birds did not choose randomly, and nor did they co-operate by always choosing the sharing cup, which would have maximized the rewards for both of them. Griffin, the dominant bird, chose selfishly when he went first, but when he had the second choice he continued to sometimes share. Arthur became more selfish over the trials, whether he was leader or follower. And while Arthur was silent throughout, Griffin sometimes said ?want nut? or ?nut?, or squeaked in a frustrated way, in response to his own or Arthur?s choices.

Of course, the parrots already had a relationship with each other which may have affected their choices. Perhaps Arthur became more selfish over time because, as the subordinate bird, it was unusual that he had a chance to do so without reprisal.

The second experiment was similar, except the birds were paired with several humans. One human was always selfish, one was always giving, and the other copied whatever the parrot had just done. In most cases, the birds had ten sessions of ten trials each (i.e. ten choices for the bird and ten for the following human), although there was some variability due to students? schedules. The main difference was that for Arthur, towards the end, there was a three week hiatus in testing because of students? exams.

As before, both birds avoided the giving and null cups. Griffin?s behaviour changed over the time of the trials. When the human was giving, Griffin began to share more over time. When the human was selfish, he became more selfish over time. With the copycat, it wasn?t clear that Griffin understood this, although there was a slight increase in sharing behaviour.

Arthur?s results were complicated by the three week gap in testing. He is a bird who doesn?t respond well to absences by people he is used to interacting with, and often greets them on their return by biting or shunning them. Prior to the gap, he was tending towards more sharing with the ?giving? human, but after the gap he reversed this behaviour. He also didn?t seem to like the copycat, and often chose the ?null? cup, which may have been his way of saying he had had enough.

These results show that Griffin seemed to understand the concept of sharing, since he tended to pick the ?share? cup more often with the ?giving? human (note that he wasn?t copying the human, because that would have involved picking the ?giving? cup). Both birds showed awareness of the value of the choices. Their choices changed over time and (at least to some extent) according to what their partner did.

One of the things I especially like about this study is that the parrots? personalities shine through.

Do you have a bird at home, and if so what kind?

Become Skinny Without Starving Yourself

Often when people ask themselves the question: how to become skinny fast, they make a mistake of overdoing their weight loss by starving themselves. There are actually a lot of diets that promise serious weight loss in a week and sometimes even without exercise. The diets make use of almost anorexic ways of no calorie intake and this is dangerous for your body and health. If you have worked for losing weight a while and you try to optimize your effort by starving yourself you will reverse your weight loss result and could end up with injuries, eating disorder, muscle loss and malnutrition.

Exercising is a great way of losing weight but it is only 50% of the healthy natural way to lose weight no matter what diet you use. You need to understand why nutrition and physical activity are like an old married couple who need each other to function properly. Your body need fuel for performing and the nutrition you intake is the fuel required for the physical activity and this is the reason why your body needs both nutrition and exercising for shedding weight.

How do you know when you are under-eating then? To answer this question you need to know these starvation facts; if you lose more than 2-3lbs. a week you are probably not having the calorie intake you should have. A male of 250 pounds needs a calorie intake of 2700 for the body's basic energy. In order to lose 2 lbs. a week this male would need to cut 7000 calories out of the 18900 calorie intake he needs for the week and this leaves 11900 calories for the entire week. This gives you a daily calorie intake of 1700!

Shredding 1000 calories each day when you need a daily intake of 2700 calories is starving yourself. Check out these symptoms you could have if you are starving yourself: Mood changes, stress increase, depression, insomnia, headache, sore throat, low resting blood pressure, skipped period for women and constipation. You might not have these symptoms but they may arrive if you start reducing your calorie intake too much and it is really not a natural way to become skinny fast.

What you will normally experience after you have lost the initial water weight on a diet is that your body will start using your stored fat for the last means of energy. If you starve yourself for losing weight the first thing you lose right after the initial water weight loss will be your muscles instead of stored fat.

Another thing you risk by starving is a decrease in your energy level, eating disorder and loss of calories could lead to serious conditions or illness. If you remembered the example of cutting 1000 calories to lose 2 lbs. a week there is a healthy natural alternative. Only cut the 500 calories through your nutrition and burn the other 500 calories by exercising. The 500 calories you need to cut through nutrition could be the unhealthy sugar bombs you might eat or drink and this should actually be enough for most people. 1 hour of walking each day will make you burn 500 calories on exercising. This is the healthy way of how to become skinny fast way without starvation.
