(AP) ? Comic and daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres was picked to host the Academy Awards for the second time.

Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced DeGeneres' selection Friday. The movie awards show will air on ABC on March 2.

"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity," the producers said in a statement. "She is beloved everywhere."

DeGeneres quipped: "I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say ? the third time's the charm."

She also announced the gig on Twitter, posting: "It's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars! I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."

Last year's host, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, drew mixed reviews for an edgy performance that included a song-and-dance number, "We Saw Your Boobs," about actresses who had gone topless on screen. He had already taken himself out of the running for a return engagement next year.

Academy Awards organizers had hoped to attract a younger audience with MacFarlane, and the ratings showed they succeeded.

With DeGeneres, they went for a star that Hollywood and television viewers were familiar and comfortable with.

About her first hosting role in 2007, television critic Frazier Moore of The Associated Press wrote that "like her, the evening was easygoing, comfortable and relatively unsurprising."

DeGeneres was nominated for an Emmy Award for her last gig. Her daytime talk show has won 45 Daytime Emmys during a decade on the air.

The Oscars, with 40.3 million viewers this year, is very often the year's most-watched television event after the Super Bowl.

Salad-tied outbreak widespread, source not pegged

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) ? Food safety advocates are sounding an alarm at the lack of information being disseminated about an enduring intestinal illness tied to prepackaged salad that has sickened nearly 400 people nationwide.

The outbreak of the rare parasite cyclospora has been reported in at least 15 states, and federal officials warned Wednesday it was too early to say it is over.

But if you're looking to find out exactly where it came from, you may be out of luck.

Health officials in Nebraska and Iowa say they've traced cases there to prepackaged salad. They haven't revealed the company that packaged the salad or where it was sold, explaining only that most if not all of it wasn't grown locally.

The lack of information has fueled concern from consumers and others who argue companies should be held accountable when outbreaks happen and customers need the information about where outbreaks came from to make smart food choices.

"If you want the free market to work properly, then you need to let people have the information they need to make informed decisions," said Bill Marler, a Seattle attorney who specializes in class-action food-safety lawsuits.

Heath authorities in California, which provides much of the nation's leafy green produce, said Wednesday the state had not received any reports of cyclospora cases.

"Based on the most currently available information, the leafy greens being implicated in this outbreak were not grown or processed in California," added spokesman Corey Egel in a statement to the Associated Press.

Mark Hutson, who owns a Save-Mart grocery story in Lincoln, Neb., said the lack of specific brand information threatened to hurt all providers, including the good actors.

"I think there was so little information as to what was causing the problem, that people just weren't sure what to do," he said. "Frankly, we would prefer to have the names out there."

Authorities said they still hadn't determined whether the cases of cyclospora in the different states are connected.

"It's too early to say for sure whether it's over, and thus too early to say there's no risk of still getting sick," said Mar?a-Bel?n Moran, spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Only Iowa and Nebraska officials had directly linked the outbreak in their states to a salad mix of iceberg and romaine lettuce, carrots and red cabbage.

Still, grocery shoppers far from known outbreak areas acknowledged it was a factor as they shopped for produce.

"I can't say I really want to go and buy particularly any lettuce right now," said Laura Flanagan, 35, who was shopping at a Whole Foods in Dallas with her two young children. "I'm being pretty cautious about it."

The product was widely distributed in Iowa by wholesalers who could have supplied the bagged salad mix to all types of food establishments, including restaurants and grocery stores, said Iowa Food and Consumer Safety Bureau chief Steven Mandernach.

Mandernach said at least 80 percent of the vegetables were grown and processed outside both Iowa and Nebraska. He said officials haven't confirmed the origins of 20 percent and may never know because victims can't always remember what they ate.

Iowa law allows public health officials to withhold the identities of any person or business affected by an outbreak. However, business names can be released to the public if the state epidemiologist or public health director determines that disclosing the information is needed to protect public safety.

Mandernach said there is no immediate threat, so his office is not required to release information about where the product came from. He said state officials believe the affected salad already has spoiled and is no longer in the supply chain.

Nebraska public health officials said they still hadn't traced the exact origins of the outbreaks.

"I am by no means giving all-clear, green light on the issue," said Dr. Joseph Acierno, the state's chief medical officer and director of public health. "We're encouraging the medical community to stay vigilant."

Food-safety and consumer advocates say the agencies shouldn't withhold the information.

"It's not clear what the policy is, and at the very least they owe it to us to explain why they come down this way," said Sandra Eskin, director of the Pew Charitable Trusts' food safety project. "I think many people wonder if this is all because of possible litigation."

Marler said withholding the information can create general fears that damage the reputation of good actors in food production. He said consumers should be allowed to decide for themselves whether to shop and grocery stores or eat at restaurants where tainted produce was sold.

Some states also are slow to interview infected people, he said, which reduces the chances that they remember where they ate.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that it didn't have enough information to name a possible source of the outbreak. In the past, the agencies have at times declined to ever name a source of an outbreak, referring to "Restaurant A" or using vague terms.

Caroline Smith DeWaal of the Center for Science in the Public Interest says that the decision to withhold a company's name may not only hurt consumers but the food industry, as well. When an item is generally implicated but officials give few specifics, like with the bagged salad, people may stop buying the product altogether.

"I think consumers need more information to make good buying decisions," she said.

Responsibility for disclosing the names of businesses involved general falls to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because their authority crosses state lines, said Doug Farquhar, a program director with the National Conference of State Legislatures. Farquhar said most states have laws that prohibit the disclosure of businesses that are affected by a foodborne illness.

"In some cases, states go 'rogue' and release the names without FDA approval, in the name of public safety," Farquhar said. "But for the most part, states prefer to let the FDA release the names and take the heat.

More than 40 percent of active Android devices now run Jelly Bean, Gingerbread stubbornly holds steady

The last time Google visited Jelly Bean's user saturation numbers, it took the combined efforts of 4.1 and 4.2 to edge out Gingerbread's (v2.3.3 through 2.3.7) hold on the user base. Not anymore; the latest numbers from the Android Dashboard show the base version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.1, representing 34 percent of the active devices -- singlehandedly surpassing the old guard's 33 percent share of the market. When combined with the rest of the Jelly Bean contingent (Android 4.2 and above), Google's latest flavor of Android crushes Gingerbread with a 40.5 percent majority.

Froyo (v2.2), Eclair (v2.1) and Ice Cream Sandwich (v4.0.3 through 4.0.4) all took modest hits as well, though the latter of the trio retained its third-place position with 22.5 percent of active users. The only builds to hold steady? Honeycomb (v3.2) and Donut (v1.6), each retaining a miniscule 0.1 percent of the market. We'll admit, it's cute to see these old versions hang on, but please -- if you're still rocking a handset running Android 1.6, do us all a favor and turn it off.

Chesapeake profit tops Street estimate, review underway

By Anna Driver

(Reuters) - Chesapeake Energy Corp's new Chief Executive Doug Lawler on Thursday said a comprehensive review of the company's partnerships and assets is underway as the second largest U.S. natural gas provider seeks to simplify its structure and improve financial discipline.

The company, which experienced a severe liquidity crunch in 2012 after spending heavily for years to acquire drilling acreage, also reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit on Thursday as it produced more crude oil than Wall Street targeted.

Investors, who have for a long-time lobbied the company to streamline its operations, pushed the company's shares up 7 percent in late morning trading. The stock rose the highest level in more than a year.

Mark Hanson, oil analyst with Morningstar said Chesapeake's oil volumes where hiweregher-than-expected on both a year-over-year and sequential basis. He also noted the company reduced its capital spending plans for 2013 and has only spent $100 million on undeveloped land so far this year.

"New Chesapeake wouldn't recognize old Chesapeake if they passed each other on the street," he said.

This is the first quarter that Chesapeake has reported earnings under Lawler, who was named to replace former CEO Aubrey McClendon in May. McClendon left the company he co-founded earlier this year after a series of Reuters investigations triggered civil and criminal probes of the company.

Lawler, a former executive with Anadarko Petroleum Corp , declined to provide many details about the review that he and other senior managers are conducting. But he said that everything will get a comprehensive look.

The general aim is to "reduce the complexity and provide better clarity on where we are getting our best returns," Lawler told analysts on a conference call. He said we would refrain from saying any asset is untouchable.

Shares of Chesapeake rose $1.55 to $24.85 in late morning New York Stock Exchange trading.

Chesapeake, said oil production in the quarter rose 44 percent to 116,000 barrels per day (bpd), with much of the growth coming from its properties in the Eagle Ford Shale in south Texas. It raised its crude output forecast for the full year.

Analysts at Bernstein Research had estimated Chesapeake's oil production at 105,000 bpd in the quarter.

Second-quarter profit at the Oklahoma City-based company fell to $457 million, or 66 cents per share, from $929 million, or $1.29 per share, a year earlier.

But adjusting for one-time items, Chesapeake had a profit of 51 cents per share. Analysts, on average, expected 41 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Apple Meets with Head of China Mobile to Discuss Potential Deal

Apple Meets with Head of China Mobile to Discuss Potential Deal

Published on 07-31-2013 02:24 PM

Tim Cook?s trip to China was said to include a visit with the head of the largest carrier in the world, China Mobile, as Apple?s chief executive continues to work toward a potential partnership. The meeting between Cook and China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua took place in Beijing, and was confirmed by the carrier to Reuters. The two sides met to discuss ?matters of cooperation,? but no other details were provided.

Speculation points towards a potential deal between Apple and China Mobile for some time. Cook most recently met with China Mobile in January but the carrier still has yet to offer the iPhone. Currently the iPhone is available on carriers China Unicom and China Telecom.

China Mobile was said to have 15 million unofficial iPhone users on its network as of March of 2012. It is also said to host roughly 715 million subscribers with only 13% of those being on high-speed 3G networks. The carrier hopes to rectify that by investing $6.7 billion to build out its 4G technology while it?s been speculated that Qualcomm?s latest LTE chips could allow Apple to have true global high-speed data support for carriers like China Mobile with its next iPhone update.

Cook is said to have also met with carrier China Telecom on his current trip to China. With Apple rumored to be planning to release a new entry-level plastic iPhone in the coming months, observers have speculated that device could have been a key point of discussion between the two companies. We?ll have to wait and see what comes out of Cook?s visit to China when more concrete information is revealed.

NYC mayoral hopefuls adjust to Weiner collapse

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn suddenly finds herself in demand on national political television talk shows, and they all want to ask her the same question: Should Anthony Weiner drop out of the race?

Quinn, the pugnacious City Council speaker who has now vaulted ahead of the former congressman in the wake of his latest sexting scandal, answers questions about her embattled rival the same way: She touts her own track record while carefully disparaging his "pattern of reckless behavior."

But, unlike other Democratic rivals, Quinn has always stopped short of calling for Weiner to bow out. Truth is, she may not want him to go anywhere.

Weiner's recent travails have ended up giving Quinn much more valuable media exposure, allowing her to portray herself as the "adult" in the race and contrast her leadership to her married rival's sordid behavior. Staying in the race could make Weiner the perfect foil, observers say.

"The debacle that we've seen over the last week and a half now, is going to ? could potentially ? help Quinn if she's able to embrace it," New York University political communications professor Jeanne Zaino said Wednesday.

Quinn's campaign has taken pains to contrast her legislative scorecard while ruling the City Council for seven years to Weiner's thin track record in Congress, where in 12 years he passed only one bill.

And political experts love Quinn's chances against Weiner if they are the two candidates to make it into a runoff, which could happen if no one achieves 40 percent of the vote in the Sept. 10 primary.

"That's the matchup she wants," said Doug Muzzio, political science professor at Baruch College. "Her strengths look the best against him, especially since he has again revealed himself to be a self-destructive candidate."

The potential benefits for Quinn if Weiner drops out are more difficult to discern since there's little overlap in their pools of voter support. A Quinnipiac College poll released this week shows Quinn's support rising only from 27 percent to 30 percent of likely Democratic voters if Weiner drops out.

That poll, which surveyed 446 likely voters, had Quinn followed by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio at 21 percent, ex-city comptroller Bill Thompson at 20 percent and Weiner at 16 percent.

Quinn, who's looking to become the city's first female and openly gay mayor, has continued a brisk campaign schedule in the wake of the latest Weiner revelations. She's trotted out the support of women's groups and unveiled her first TV ad just a week before the scandal broke.

The final line of the 30-second ad is a clear shot at Weiner, who talks incessantly about the middle class.

"I'm Christine Quinn," she says. "While others talk about fighting for the middle class, I've been doing it."

Quinn's resurgence has come as Weiner's campaign has been besieged by questions from the media and voters about exchanging sexually explicit messages with women online even after that behavior forced him from Congress.

The latest negative headlines came Wednesday, when Weiner's chief spokeswoman was forced to apologize for an expletive-laced tirade aimed at a former intern who wrote an unflattering first-person article about her experience working on Weiner's campaign.

In a stark contrast to Quinn, de Blasio and Thompson have forcefully called for the scandal-scarred candidate to bow out. Neither candidate had climbed higher than third in any poll before Weiner was revealed to have continued sending illicit messages even after he resigned from Congress in 2011.

Political analysts say de Blaiso was most hurt by Weiner's earlier success, since the two men cut a similar political persona: progressive, feisty, with their base of support found in the boroughs outside Manhattan. De Blasio's second-place showing in this week's Quinnipiac poll is by far his strongest in the race so far.

Thompson, the race's only black candidate, also would appear to benefit from Weiner's departure.

Thompson's team has spoken openly of its hope to win decisively among black voters, yet Weiner has remained the most popular candidate among them. Weiner pulled in 24 percent of black voters in the Quinnipiac poll, and Thompson would seem poised to grab more of them than de Blasio or Quinn.

Weiner has vowed to stay in the race to succeed independent Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Leaders Don't Understand Innovation - Business Insider

Jeff DeGraff

BigSpeak Speakers Bureau/YouTube

Today's advice comes from Jeff DeGraff, business professor at the University of Michigan, via LinkedIn:?

"Chances are, innovation doesn?t work where you work ? or only works some of the time, mostly in spite of your organization?s system and processes. Why? Because you don?t understand what makes the innovation game so different from everything else you do at work ?and you haven?t adjusted your playbook to accommodate these differences."

DeGraff says that most young leaders get a lot wrong about how to reach true innovation. First, data can't always help your business predict the future and businesses tend to rely on it too much for guidance. Second, failure is inevitable and innovation happens in cycles. Lastly, DeGraff warns not to ignore ideas that seem unconventional or implausible.?

"You need to adjust your key indicators as you traverse the undiscovered country ... don?t believe that once you take a higher point of view others will follow. Those who see the future first are always assumed to be delusional because in some ways they are."

Help Me Create A Large Healthy Sex Positive Community

I want to create a sex positive community. Someplace where people can come and talk about all kinds of things, understanding that everyone involved in the community is ok with the fact that sometimes there will be talk of sex.

I plan on creating a community with a public area to talk about life; food, travel, parenting etc, and a private area to talk about sexual abuse, fetishes, masturbation, curiosities, erotica; all manor of sexual adventures. I also want to discuss sensitive, but important topics like sex positive, gender neutral and queer parenting.

By compartmentalizing sex we add to the shame of having sexual desires, a sexual past or having been sexually abused. We all have sex. Most of us even like having it. We all have secret interests and social shames. We all feel like we are the only one who? fill in the blank. In order to blur the lines between sex blogger and non-sex blogger and bring sex out from behind the back counter, I?m looking for sex positive bloggers who blog about other things, food, parenting, health, travel, crafting, to help me build this community.

If you are interested in helping create this community, I will give you your own little section of the forum to moderate and promote your blog and your ideas. Your ?lounge? can be public or private (private being available only to those who are registered and logged in, public being open and searchable via google etc.) I am also considering an even more private option that will require all members be registered, logged in AND have approved membership.

This will be a women centric space, but we will welcome men. There is going to be a Boys Room/Man Cave which will be a place for them to talk about their own sexuality, as well ask about the sexual care and maintenance of their ladies and gentlemen.

This space will NOT be a dating space, although there will be, if you, the community, decide one should be included.

People of all sexual and gender orientations will be welcome and embraced. Kinky and vanilla as well as all relationship statuses will also be embraced; monogamous, poly, open relationship, single and on the prowl. It doesn?t matter. We will all be there to learn and share and RESPECT each other.

Trolls will not be tolerated and I am working on a way to let the community self moderate with a point system of some sort. Any help or suggestions there would be appreciated.

I also plan on hosting a place where sex toy companies can post their latest sales, coupon codes and give aways. Other ideas for group resources are more then welcome.

This will be YOUR community where YOU can promote yourself, your projects and your blog as well as help create a world in which?those of us who are more open about sex feel less marginalized and more empowered.

If you would like to be involved, email me! If you want to know when the community launches, sign up for my newsletter.

Indianapolis church mourns three who died in bus crash

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis congregation on Sunday mourned the deaths of their youth pastor, his pregnant wife and another member who were killed when a church bus overturned with just a mile to go in a return trip from a Michigan summer camp.

Saturday's accident devastated members of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, who had been anticipating a joyful homecoming with the 37 people who were aboard the bus. Youth pastor Chad Phelps, his pregnant piano-teacher wife, Courtney Phelps, and chaperone Tonya Weindorf were killed, said deacon Jeff Leffew.

Dozens of people were injured in the crash, which happened near Interstate 465. On Sunday, six teenagers remained hospitalized, including one who was in critical condition.

Dennis Maurer, a 68-year-old congregation member who was driving the church-owned bus, told authorities that its brakes failed before it struck a raised concrete median and flipped on its side, Indianapolis police said.

The Phelpses, who were in their mid-20s, were expecting their second child, Leffew said. Chad Phelps was the son of the church's senior pastor and became its youth pastor late last year, he said.

"We're going to have a long road, but God is good," Leffew said at a Sunday news conference.

The couple's nearly 2-year-old child, Chase, was injured in the crash. He was treated and released from a hospital Saturday, IU Health spokeswoman Sally Winter said.

The bus had nearly completed its 365-mile journey from Camp CoBeAc, near Prudenville, Mich., when it overturned about a mile from the church, where parents were waiting to pick up their children who had just spent a week praying, zip-lining and playing basketball.

Weindorf, the 51-year-old chaperone who was killed, had five children, Leffew said.

"Tonya was at camp because she has a special-needs child who wanted to go, and she wanted to go and make it a good week, and according to her husband, it was a great week, and that's who Tonya was," said Leffew, who sent four of his own daughter to the camp.

Leffew, of Fishers, said only one of his daughters was on a second bus that pulled into the parking lot, and that he raced to the northern Indianapolis crash site. What he found was surreal - clothing and other items strewn about and windows missing from the bus.

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," he said Saturday. His daughters escaped with bumps and bruises.

Troy Riggs, Indianapolis' public safety director, called the crash a "great tragedy."

"They were not that far from home. ... That only adds to the tragedy," Riggs said Saturday.

Duane Lloyd, who witnessed the crash, told WTHR that he saw the crash happen at about 4:15 p.m., which was about the time Chad Phelps tweeted that the group would arrive at the church.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

He said people approached and tried to help.

"People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Three of the six hospitalized teens, including the one in critical condition, were at IU Health Methodist Hospital, Winter said Sunday. The other three were at the Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Many of the patients had head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Leffew thanked rescue workers and good Samaritans who tried to help after the crash, as well as local churches and businesses that have offered their support.

"We are so grateful for that outpouring of love and care," he said Sunday.

Tigers acquire reliever Veras from Astros

DETROIT (AP) ? The Detroit Tigers added some help for their shaky bullpen Monday, acquiring reliever Jose Veras from the Houston Astros for minor league outfielder Danry Vasquez and a player to be named.

Veras is 0-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 19 saves this season, and the 32-year-old right-hander has struck out 44 in 43 innings with only 14 walks.

"We are pleased to add an experienced arm to our bullpen," Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "Jose can pitch in a variety of roles, provides depth in the bullpen, and complements the roles of Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly."

Detroit entered the season with a lot of uncertainty at the closer spot, and although Benoit has pitched well in that role of late, the AL Central-leading Tigers still needed bullpen depth. Aside from Benoit and Smyly, none of their other relievers have been all that effective on a consistent basis.

Veras has been a steady contributor while bouncing from team to team in recent years. He posted a 3.75 ERA with Florida in 2010, a 3.80 ERA with Pittsburgh in 2011 and a 3.63 ERA with Milwaukee last season.

Houston signed him to a one-year deal last offseason, and the last-place Astros could certainly afford to trade their closer if the opportunity to acquire a solid prospect presented itself. Vasquez is only 19, but he was ranked by Baseball America as the sixth-best prospect in Detroit's system before this season.

Vasquez hit .281 with five home runs and 39 RBIs in 96 games for Class A West Michigan this year.

"We are excited to get an outfield prospect of Danry's caliber. He adds to an already formidable group of prospects at the A ball level," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "Jose will be missed as a team leader both on and off the field."

Benoit has converted all 10 of his save chances for the Tigers this season, and the left-handed Smyly is 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA in 61 innings. In Veras, Detroit now adds a right-hander who can pitch in the late innings.

Before this trade, the Tigers' top right-handed options in the late innings ? aside from Benoit ? were probably Al Alburquerque and Bruce Rondon. Alburquerque has struggled with his control, and although the hard-throwing Rondon has looked better lately, he's still fairly unproven.

Detroit's deadline deals have worked out well the last couple years. The Tigers acquired starter Doug Fister from Seattle in 2011 and added starter Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante in a deal with the Marlins in 2012. Not only did those three players provide help when they arrived, but they're also all still with the team.

This trade probably won't generate as much buzz as those deals, but it helps fill a need for a Detroit team that's hoping to return to the World Series after being swept by San Francisco a year ago.

The South Africa Edge - Start-ups Find Collaborative Work Space in Johannesburg

In Johannesburg, South Africa, there are a small but growing number of shared office spaces in which sole proprietors and small businesses rent a desk and other services.? For small business owners and start-up companies, this route not only provides cheaper overhead for workspace, but it also helps entrepreneurs network.?

The OPEN Collaborative Workspace is on the fourth floor of a building in an artsy, up and coming area just south of downtown Johannesburg, in a neighborhood called Maboneng.

Inside, it is a large open space, with meeting rooms and work rooms off to the side.? There are dozens of tables and chairs set up as desks, couches for meetings, floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the city outside, a full coffee bar with an on-site barista, and some recreational activities to take a break.

"We are standing on a custom built nine-hole putting green. The thought behind it was everyone thinks business is done on a golf course. We could not build a golf course in Maboneng, unfortunately, so we built the putting green. ... It is a versatile space, and it also gives a little break away for members and people visiting the space to come and putt along the green, which is quite awesome," said Westleigh Wilkinson. Wilkinson manages the site and also runs his event planning business from OPEN.

"OPEN's philosophy is very much based on collaboration and innovation through shared knowledge ... We have got a lot of great stories where businesses have grown into the main change [building] and Maboneng as a whole," he added.

There are about 30 members of OPEN, mostly small start-up companies in the technology field, although there are also satellite offices for people who run logistics for manufacturing companies and one member who runs an online casino.

One of the co-founders of OPEN, Paul Keursten, says it spawned from three ideas. First, he says, the founders wanted to cater to people who are self-employed or work part time.

"The other line of thinking is that so many people go to their workplace not feeling that it?s a great place to be. ?Most offices are dull, uninspiring ... Why do not you make it a place that you want to go to? ... Another line of thinking, is that we need innovation to happen. Innovation happens in a place where you meet people, where you think of ideas, it happens around the coffee, it happens on accidental meetings ? We wanted to create a place where that can happen," he said.

There are a growing number of spaces like OPEN in Johannesburg. But there are also coffee shops and restaurants attempting to fill that void for those working the virtual world. The IT Corner in the Johannesburg suburb of Melville is a coffee shop that doubles as an office for many in the neighborhood. Abdul Kader Bouredji, the co-owner, opened the shop in 2010.

"That's my idea to provide, printer, fax facilities, copies, scanning, offices, for example some ladies here have an office, but don't want to sit between four doors, so they'd rather come here. They see new faces but they do their work," he said.

Local Ward Councillor Amanda Forsythe sat at an outdoor table Tuesday afternoon with another councilor. Forsythe said she uses the space frequently for work.

"This for me is an ideal working space, because not only do I get to see various people all in one go often, but I also get to know what's going on in the neighborhood?.Before I was a councilor I had my own company and working as an entrepreneur that can also be can be incredibly lonely," she said.

Such spaces also provide networking opportunities. Luthando Mfabe works for a company called Digital Voodoo, which does digital marketing. The company is headquartered in the OPEN space - where he says he?s come across many new opportunities.

"You do get a lot of exposure. If someone wants a web designer, somebody knows us and they refer us to that person. We do get a lot of business like from just collaborating or just sharing the space," he said. He's collaborated with another OPEN member on advertising campaigns which they are currently pitching to several international clients.

Mfabe says he's enjoyed working in the space, though sometimes it can be tough not having a door to close when he's crashing on a project. "That's the only thing, but it?s a negative sometimes, sometimes it?s a positive," he said. Overall, he says, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Look Out World: Pittsburgh Head Coach Mike Tomlin Is Now on Twitter

The sports world has seen a lot of Twitter fails over the past few years, whether it's because of a lack of a filter, stupidity, or failure to keep baby mother problems private. That said, there's still a lot of level-headed sports figures who can make a splash on Twitter?like Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin. We'd assume he does have a clear head after being the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl.?

Sadly, he was never on Twitter...until now! Tomlin finally made an account, and apparently he's going to give us that real.

He then followed that up with another tweet, and sadly, it wasn't a shoutout to "rapper" Supa Hot Fire?or the infamous Dylan. It was a picture with chairman Dan?Rooney:

Are those suspenders and is Rooney trying to bring them back in style? That'd be fire. Anyway, let's see what Tomlin has to offer on Twitter.

Falling rupee puts pressure on RBI at $2 billion debt sale

MUMBAI | Thu Jul 18, 2013 6:21pm IST

MUMBAI (Reuters) - The RBI's effort to support the rupee by sucking liquidity from the market through a $2 billion bond sale fell short on Thursday as it accepted just over one-fifth of the bids, adding pressure on it to find other ways to mop up rupees.

The open market operation was part of the Reserve Bank of India's three-pronged plan unveiled late on Monday to prop up a rupee that has lost about 10 percent against the dollar since the start of May.

But the other steps, including hiking short-term rates by 200 basis points, sent bond yields surging, creating a mismatch in pricing demands. In Thursday's open market operation (OMO), the RBI accepted bids for just 25.32 billion rupees.

"This does complicate the RBI's task of managing rupee through the liquidity channel," said Rohit Arora, emerging market rate strategist at Barclays Capital in Singapore.

"We expect it to continue doing more OMO sales in the near term. The other option to stabilize the rupee for the government is to issue an offshore bond," he said.

Whatever measures the central bank takes are liable to be little more than short-term fixes, as the rupee's weakness stems from a record high current account deficit.

The currency's vulnerability was laid bare by the sea-change in global capital flows following speculation that the U.S. Federal Reserve would begin to wind down its money-printing stimulus programme later this year, which convinced investors to pull money out of riskier assets.

While trying to conserve its currency reserves, equivalent to just seven months of imports, the RBI has sought to limit avenues for speculation against the currency, to buy time for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government to come up with measures to reduce the external deficits.

A relaxation of rules for foreign direct investment announced on Tuesday for several industries, including telecommmunications, failed to give big boost to sentiment.

Besides further OMOs, the RBI could try to pressure New Delhi to bite the bullet and accept less-favourable pricing at its bond sales in order to drain liquidity. The next such sale is due Friday. On Wednesday, the RBI rejected all bids in a $2 billion Treasury bill auction on the government's behalf.

India is also contemplating a sovereign bond issue in order to attract inflows and prop up the rupee. An increase in the RBI's policy repo rate at its July 30 review, once unthinkable, has also become an outside prospect, as has an increase in the cash reserve ratio for banks.

"The RBI's rejection of bids at the OMO and the treasury bill auction suggests it does not want yields to rise too much, but only wants to drain liquidity. The only option before it now looks like an at least 50 bps CRR hike on July 30," said Baljinder Singh, a bond dealer with Andhra Bank.

The rupee, meanwhile, weakened further on Thursday and is close to losing all of the gains made since the central bank's bold and unexpected measures on Monday, which rattled markets and led some economists to cut their growth forecasts for Asia's third-largest economy.

The currency ended at 59.67/68 to the dollar, from a previous close of 59.34/35. It hit an all-time low of 61.21 on July 8 as investors fret about the current account deficit and a lack of structural reforms in an economy growing at a decade low of 5 percent.

Government bond yields eased on Thursday after the RBI's bond sale, with the benchmark 10-year bond yield dropping 6 basis points on the day to 7.99 percent. Yields are still up 44 basis points from before Monday night's measures.

The hike in short-term interest has virtually shut the market in commercial bonds and short-term bonds used through which companies and banks raise short-term funds.

Foreign investors sold more than $200 million in Indian debt and stocks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Indian stocks gained about 1 percent on Thursday. (Additional reporting by Subhadip Sircar, Swati Bhat and Neha Dasgupta; Editing by Tony Munroe and Simon Cameron-Moore)

10 Mesmerizing GIFs of Giant Buildings Being Demolished

We tend to think of demolition as destructive: dynamite, dust, and plenty of fireworks. But as a New York Times article recently described, demolition in dense cities is, more and more often, a "stealth" operation, where a building is dismantled over a number of weeks.

The article describes the slow demolition of Tokyo's 40-story Akasaka Hotel, which was taken apart, piece by piece, at a rate of two stories every ten days. The building was built in 1982 by Kenzo Tange, a venerable modernist who is much-loved by historians and architects?part of the reason why the stealth demolition seemed like a good idea. ?We want people not to really see the demolition work," the development manager told the NYT. ?The noise level is 20 decibels lower than the conventional way, and there?s 90 percent less dust leaving the area.?

Stealth aside, there are plenty of old-school demolitions still happening in the world, for better or worse (check out the 300-pounds-of-dynamite job that took place earlier this year in El Paso, below). After Architizer rounded up some of the best last week, we thought we'd add a few of our own favorites to the mix. There are dozens of great videos and GIFs out there, though, so post your own in the comments, below.

Songza introduces paid adfree service, costs $099 a week

Songza joined the ad-free music streaming club today with a club of its own: Club Songza. Like the premium services on Spotify and Slacker, you'll have to cough up a few pennies to belong -- about 99 of them a week, to be exact. Listening to music without commercial interruption isn't the only benefit however; apparently paid subscribers will get additional goodies like twice as many skips and access to more premium content as well. Songza diehards can go ahead and sign up for the service at the source, though we should remind you that there are always cheaper options for your music fix.
